Justice Speaks Podcast Episode #44
In this episode of Justice Speaks, JSI Co-President David Wallace interviews Banita Fidyova, Secretary General of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims Foundation. They discuss the Foundation’s global efforts to honor road crash victims and advocate for safer roads.
The Origins and Mission of the World Day of Remembrance
Every third Sunday in November, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) unites individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide to commemorate lives lost in traffic crashes. Founded by Brigitte Chaudhry in 1993 after losing her son in a fatal crash, WDoR has grown into a global movement recognized by the United Nations since 2005, with participation from 208 countries.
The Foundation’s mission is to raise awareness, honor victims and their families, and promote road safety initiatives. The theme “Remember, Support, Act” emphasizes remembrance, support for victims, and action to prevent future tragedies.
Traffic Crashes: A Global Tragedy
Globally, someone dies in a traffic crash every 24 seconds. These tragedies impact individuals, families, and economies worldwide. The Foundation advocates for a zero-fatality goal, emphasizing that any loss is unacceptable.
Participating in the World Day of Remembrance
Individuals and organizations can participate by:
- Adding events to the Foundation’s website at worlddayofremembrance.org
- Downloading free multilingual materials, including posters and logos
- Lighting a candle or creating window displays for the Light of Hope Initiative
Events range from marches and religious services to campaigns hosted by governments and NGOs. The Foundation also encourages the establishment of permanent memorials for road victims in capital cities worldwide.
Light of Hope Initiative
The Foundation’s Light of Hope Initiative calls for individuals to light a candle in memory of road traffic victims on the third Sunday in November. Communities, organizations, and office buildings are joining this symbolic effort to raise awareness and honor lives lost.
