Justice Speaks Podcast Episode #37
In this episode of Justice Speaks, we focus on the critical issue of Traffic Safety and Bigger Trucks, exploring their impact on our roads and highways. JSI Co-President David Wallace interviews retired Sheriff Donald Smith, former head of Putnam County, New York, and current Law Enforcement Board member of the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks (CABT).
The Importance of Traffic Safety
Sheriff Smith begins by emphasizing that traffic safety is vital to saving lives. In 2021 alone, approximately 46,000 people lost their lives in traffic crashes across the United States, many in rural areas where crashes far outnumber traditional homicides. He highlights that every one of these deaths represents a shattered family, reinforcing the critical need for safe driving practices and properly maintained vehicles.
Sheriff Smith also points out that while the majority of truck drivers are safe professionals who value safety, the inherent risks associated with semi-trucks make it crucial to ensure trucks are well-maintained, drivers are adequately trained, and loads are properly distributed.

Why Bigger Trucks Pose a Threat
A key concern for Sheriff Smith and CABT is the push for bigger and heavier trucks. He explains that increasing truck weights above 80,000 pounds or extending trailer lengths compromises safety. These changes result in:
- Longer stopping distances
- Shifts in center of gravity, increasing rollover risks
- Reduced maneuverability and visibility
Sheriff Smith notes that issues like trailer sway and the “crack-the-whip” effect with longer trailers further endanger road users. Bigger trucks also increase the risk of infrastructure failures, such as bridge collapses, as demonstrated by recent incidents under investigation.
The Coalition Against Bigger Trucks (CABT)
CABT was formed to serve as a watchdog on issues of truck size, weight, and configuration. Sheriff Smith shares how CABT collaborates with law enforcement, policymakers, and other organizations to educate the public about the risks of bigger trucks. Through publications, awareness campaigns, and advocacy efforts, CABT works to ensure safety remains the priority in any policy discussions.
Industry Insights: OOIDA Survey
Addressing claims that larger trucks could solve supply chain and driver shortages, Sheriff Smith cites a survey by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA):
- 84% of drivers believe heavier trucks would harm traffic safety.
- 85% believe longer trucks impair road safety.
- 93% say increased truck weights would damage infrastructure.
How to Get Involved
Sheriff Smith encourages listeners to support CABT’s efforts by visiting their website, learning about the issue, and contacting state and federal representatives to advocate for traffic safety and responsible trucking policies.
By focusing on the safety of all road users, CABT and leaders like Sheriff Smith are making a difference in protecting lives and ensuring our roads remain safe for everyone.
