Honorable Brian MacKenzie

Judge Brian MacKenzie is an award-winning judicial educator who retired from the bench after almost 27 years of service. Upon leaving, he became one of the founders of the Justice Speakers Institute and serves as its Co-President and Chief Financial Officer.

He has served as the president of the American Judges Association and the Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals. He was honored to be the American Bar Association/National Highway Traffic Safety Association 2008 - 2010 Judicial Fellow. He is currently a member of the International Society for the Rule of Law.

Judge Mackenzie is the co-editor of the National Judicial College’s Science Bench Book for Judges, and author of its section “Post Sentencing Supervision.” He is the co-author of “The Michigan Drug Testing Manuel” and the author of the American Judges Association’s position paper “Procedural Fairness: The Key to Drug Treatment Courts.” 

He has lectured throughout the world on numerous issues including procedural fairness, scientific evidence, veterans’ treatment courts, domestic violence, drug treatment courts, alcohol and other drug testing, and electronically stored evidence. He was invited to be an official observer at the conference regarding the treaty between the European Union and Turkey involving Syrian refugees.

Judge MacKenzie was education chair of the American Judges Association and the chair of the American Bar Association’s Traffic Court Conference.  He has taught for, among others, the National Judicial College, The National Association of Drug Court Professionals, the Center for Court Innovation, The National Center for State Courts, the American Judges Association, the American Bar Association, American University and the National Association of Court Managers. 

He has been honored by the Foundation for the Improvement of Justice with the Paul H. Chapman medal for significant contributions to the American Criminal Justice System and by the American Judges Association’s Elliott Zide award for significant contributions to judicial education.
