Justice Speaks Podcast Episode #42

In this episode of Justice Speaks, JSI Co-President David Wallace interviews Elizabeth Anderson, Executive Director of the World Justice Project (WJP), to explore the vital role of the rule of law in creating safer and fairer societies worldwide.

Meet Elizabeth Anderson

Ms. Elizabeth Anderson

Elizabeth Anderson’s career began with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, where she witnessed the consequences of a system that do not follow just laws. That transformative experience set her on a path to advocate for human rights and strengthen legal systems globally.

About The World Justice Project

The World Justice Project (WJP) is an international non-partisan nonprofit, based in Washington, D.C., with offices in Seattle, Mexico City, and Singapore. The WJP promotes a durable system of accountability, just laws, open government, and accessible justice.

What is the Rule of Law

WJP defines the rule of law as a system that:

  1. Ensures accountability.
  2. Upholds just laws.
  3. Maintains open government.
  4. Provides accessible and impartial justice.

Anderson emphasizes that just laws extend beyond courts, requiring community commitment and social trust.

Rule of Law
Ultimately, the rule of law relies on community commitment and its social contract to be effective

The Rule of Law Index

The Rule of Law Index, published annually, evaluates 140 countries across eight factors to measure the state of each country. By surveying citizens and legal practitioners, the index highlights global progress and challenges. While many nations face declines, Anderson remains hopeful for improvement.

Why the Rule of Law Matters

Societies with just laws see better outcomes in health, education, peace, and economic stability. The WJP fosters partnerships to implement best practices and promotes initiatives like the World Justice Challenge, which showcases innovative solutions.

Challenges and Priorities

While global challenges persist, WJP is expanding its focus to subnational levels, studying local impacts in countries like Mexico and across the European Union. Anderson notes that improving the rule of law begins with individual action, integrity, and fairness.
