Incorporating MOUD Treatment Into Community Supervision

The Justice Speakers Institute (JSI), in collaboration with the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) and Indivior, delivered a dynamic half-day training at the APPA Winter Training Institute in Seattle, Washington. This session focused on addressing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and leveraging Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) as critical tools in recovery and supervision. Designed for justice professionals, the training employed a collaborative learning model, enabling participants to learn from a team of subject matter experts.

Attendees gained up-to-date scientific insights into the physiological and psychological effects of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and recovery, equipping them to make informed decisions when supervising individuals with OUD. The training also featured a dedicated session on Naloxone and Nalmefene, life-saving medications that rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. Participants learned how these medications work and how to administer them effectively in emergency situations.

Additionally, the program explored the implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for individuals receiving MOUD, emphasizing the importance of reasonable accommodations and supervision best practices. This comprehensive training provided justice professionals with actionable strategies to address the opioid epidemic, making a meaningful impact in their work with justice-involved populations.
