Substance Use Disorders and Women

Women’s initiation to alcohol and other drug use is different from men’s.  Their continued use is often dissimilar as well.  Women in trouble with the criminal justice system have higher rates of surviving domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse and rape than the general population.  How can treatment programs be more gender and trauma informed?  What can courts do to accommodate the needs of these women?  Are there issues in custody that are different?  And what about their children?
