Procedural fairness in the Trauma-Informed Courtroom

JSI Co-President Judge Brian MacKenzie (Ret.) and JSI Associate Judge Kevin Burke (Ret.) will focus on procedural fairness in creating a trauma informed courtroom. Specifically, it will include practical suggestions using the concept of procedural fairness for the courtroom personnel who are trauma informed.

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

•   Learn why judges and other justice professionals need to be cognizant of trauma as it relates to court cases.

•   Appreciate that trauma seems to be the overwhelming negative factor affecting many court users.

•   Understand the four principles of procedural fairness.

•   Implement trauma informed strategies using the principles of procedural fairness.
